DOOARS FROG & TOAD FESTIVAL, a proposal

Dates 15th to 17th September, 2009.
Venue of the festival: Chilapata, Mendabari, Kodalbasti & Madarihat
Organized by:
Wildlife Circle (Coochbehar Division),
Department of Forests, Government of West Bengal
& Help Tourism
Supported by:
India Tourism Kolkata (Government of Tourism, Government of India), Mendabari Jungle Camp, Chilapata Jungle Camp, Association for Conservation & Tourism (ACT), Eastern Himalaya Travel & Tour Operators Association (EHTTOA), Society for Preservation & Awareness of Wildlife & Nature (SPAWN).

The festival was started in 2008 as Chilapata Ecofest on the same dates. Owing to impact of such festivals on the local people, specially the forest villagers in regard to conservation, the festival has been upgraded to Dooars Frog & Toad Festival involving the whole of the natural areas of Central Dooars.

With the change in the micro climate, the first change is seen in the localities close to the forests, mainly with birds and amphibians. Hence, this name 'Frog & Toad Festival', before we stop listening to their croaking, the loss monsoons that renew life and stop the migration of people who make the food for the world.

- This was an outcome of the Chilapata Ecofest held in 2008 between 15th to 19th Sep.
- The same festival is being expanded as ‘Dooars Frog & Toad Festival’ maintaining the same dates 15th to 17th Sep, 2009 and extended this year to Chilapata, Mendabari, kodalbasti, Lankapara and Madarihat ranges.
- The main intension of the name Frog & Toad is because they are the primary indicators of the changing climate.
- The areas included in the festival are a part or micro climate of the East Himalaya and hence to create a model for community motivated conservation.
- The tribal bill that has been implemented, to support it by developing the capacities of the forest villagers in the field of conservation and empowering them in ownership and preservation of their backyard forests.
- The said festival area is facing major crisis of degradation under political support, who are misinterpreting and misusing the bill and forest department is facing problem in conserving this extraordinary landscape.
- The said area is the only surviving corridor between two major protected areas, Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary & Buxa Tiger Reserve. The said area also connects Bhutan.
- The meeting held with the ecoguides and local lodge owners on the 27th of August, 2009 at the Chilapata Jungle Camp, the program fixed till now is 15th Inauguration near Baniya River beyond the Chilapata Jungle Camp, 16th launching of the new ecotourism products from the Madarihat areas and 17th Foundation stone laying of the ‘Dooars tribal community centre’ at Kodalbasti by Shri.Jogesh Burman at 16:00 hrs.
